The Game Maker's Apprentice, which is a great resource book written by *Mark Overmars (the developer of GameMaker) and **Jacob Habgood (Sheffield Hallam University). This is essential (and addictive) reading to go beyond the basics based on using GameMaker for Windows version 8.0
*Mark is a full professor in Computer Science at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Here he heads the center for Advanced Gaming and Simulation. One of his research domains is computer games. He is one of the founders of the Utrecht Platform for Game Education and Research and teaches courses on computer game design at Utrecht University. Mark is the author of many software packages. In particular, he is the author of the GameMaker software package which will be used as development tool in this book.
**Jacob Habgood is a senior lecturer in Games Development at Sheffield Hallam. He worked in the UK Games Industry as a programmer and project-manager for Gremlin, Infogrames and Sumo-Digital over a period of 14 years. During this time he worked on over a dozen published games for the PlayStation 1 and 2, XBox, Gamecube and DS. Jacob has a Ph.D. in game-based-learning and conducts research into the effective integration of digital games and learning content, researching the educational potential of computer games.
